A black bird stands inside on a single curved stroke, its head and beak a second stroke set at an angle across the first. A clear ring finishes the foot of the dome and shows as a pale line round the base.

Cobalt Blue Shell Round a Two-Stroke Bird

Blue is a colour that recedes, so here the dome reads as a cool volume of air with the bird held at its centre. The bars are traced rather than built, deeper lines of blue in the shell, which keeps the idea of a cage without the clutter of wire. The bird is pared down to the gesture of one: a body that rises in one curve and a head flung forward, black against the blue, so it reads from across a room. Because the colour is even all through the shell, no side of the cage is its back.

Its cool blue suits a bedroom, a bathroom with good daylight or a quiet study, and against white walls the black bird inside stands out clearly. Hung near a window it throws a faint blue cast across a sill or a wall in the afternoon, which changes through the day as the sun moves round.

A Bird in White or Gold, and Shipping

Give it 3–4 weeks as a standard piece, or 5–6 weeks as a bespoke commission. The shell can be tinted another blue, from pale sky to near navy, or another colour altogether, and the bird given a white or gilded finish in place of black. The traced bars can be spaced more widely or left off for a smooth dome, or drawn in white instead. Each cage is packed upright in a foam-lined carton, and it reaches you ready for hanging. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

A bird kept inside a blue dome belongs with our bird sculptures; a cage traced in deeper blue lines suits our contemporary and modern sculptures, and a cool hanging piece for a bedroom joins our indoor sculptures.

Specification

Height

58cm

Width

31cm

Depth

31cm

Material

Transparent Blue Shell, 3D-Printed Bird and Metal
