The band is not on the surface: it sits inside the material and is read through the pale body from both sides, breaking up into fine vertical trails at its edges. Two dark angled steel frames carry it, splayed so their feet stand outside the line of the slab.

One Dense Band Running Through a Pale Body

A band held inside a pale body has to be dense enough to read and open enough to keep the body pale, and those pull in opposite directions. Here the dark blue is concentrated in a narrow horizontal zone and left to break at its own edges, which gives the fine vertical trails above and below it and keeps the transition from looking printed. Because the surrounding material is a pale tint rather than colourless, the band is read at a slightly different depth from each side, and the slab therefore has a front and a back even though it is symmetrical. The arrises are polished so the band shows in section at each end. The dark steel frames are coated matt to keep the eye on the slab. Every band breaks differently.

It is at seating height and takes two people, which suits a bedroom, a hall, or a dining table where a bench serves better than chairs. The band is best read from the side rather than from above, so a position you walk past does more for it than one you look down on. A pale wall behind it keeps the band legible; a dark one makes the whole slab read as one tone. The splayed feet stand outside the slab, so allow for that when setting it against a skirting.

Band Position, Frame Angle and Two-Part Assembly

Production takes approximately 3–4 weeks for a standard piece, or 5–6 weeks for a bespoke commission. The band can be set higher or deeper within the slab, and a version with two bands is available. Colour is drawn from the same stock, so the pale body and the band can be moved together into green or grey. The bench is made to whatever length the wall wants. The frames can be supplied in a polished finish instead of the matt coating, and their splay can be drawn in where floor space is tight. Slab and frames travel separately and bolt through plates set into the underside, so the bench arrives in three manageable pieces. Two people are wanted for the slab. Each frame is a one-person carry, and the feet are boxed since a coated edge marks readily.
