blue-and-white-layered-mountain-acrylic-sculpture-119cm
Blue & White Layered Mountain Acrylic Sculpture - 119cm

Description

An acrylic sculpture of a mountain range, cut through a stack of horizontal layers that step in as they rise, making the skyline a flight of steps rather than a curve. There are two main summits, a tall one left of centre and a stubbier one right of centre, with a small third rise beyond them, and the range runs out in a short tail to the left and a long one to the right. Below the waistline the two summits are repeated upside down as two inverted points, so the piece reads as mountains and their reflection in still water without any water being shown. It is pale and frosted through the middle, blue along the edges of the layers and deepest, almost navy, at the two points that come down onto the white marble base.

Peaks and Their Reflection in One Body

What makes this difficult is that the reflection is not a second object. It is the same body continued downward, so the top and bottom profiles have to answer each other layer for layer, and an error of one layer at the summit shows as a visible mismatch at the bottom point. Each layer is cut separately and the stack is worked as one afterwards, which is where the stepped edges get their evenness. The colour is not painted on: it is carried in the layers themselves, pale through the frosted middle and deepening to almost navy at the two descending points. The whole thing then stands on only two contact points, so those two points are ground flat together and bedded onto the marble rather than each being finished on its own.

This is a long, low piece and it needs a run of surface to itself, along a credenza or the top of a long sideboard, seen from the front and from a little below. It does not suit a corner, because the tails need to end in open space rather than against a return wall. Backlight is what it is for. Light behind or beside it lifts the blue along the layer edges; light from directly in front finds the stepped edges and flattens everything behind them. A plain wall behind it matters more than usual, since you are looking through the piece at whatever is there.

Colour, Length and Bringing It Through a Door

Give it 3–4 weeks as a standard piece, or 5–6 weeks as a bespoke commission. The colour runs to order: this blue, a green, a smoke grey, or clear throughout with no grading at all. The number of summits and the length of the tails are both part of the drawing rather than fixed, so a longer range with more peaks or a compact one with a single summit come from the same design. The mirrored underside can be left off for a range that simply sits on its base. Marble comes in this white, a black or a grey. It is carried by supporting the underside along its length rather than by either tail, which is the thinnest part of it. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Landscape cut into layers reads as abstract sculpture; the sheet it is cut from is the business of acrylic sculpture; and the polish survives only in indoor sculpture.

Specification

Height

45cm

Width

119cm

Depth

32cm

Base

35 x 20 x 6cm

Material

Layered Clear & Blue Acrylic on White Marble
