It rests on those two tips on a small white marble block.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eTwo Peaks and Their Reflection in Layers\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eA mountain mirrored in a lake is an old image, and building it from layers makes it new: each sheet is a contour line, and the stepping draws both the peaks and their reflection in the same fine terraces. The horizon, where the sheets are longest, is the palest part, frosted to a milky clear; the colour gathers below it, so the reflection darkens towards its two tips while the summits above stay pale, the higher one only edged in blue. The long horizon line extends well beyond the peaks on both sides, which gives the piece its calm.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ePut it on a desk, a shelf or a sideboard where it is met face on, in a study, an office or a sitting room. Light from behind or from one side makes the layered edges glow and the blue deepen. Being shallow from front to back, it takes very little surface, and it reads best at eye level.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eGradings, Width and Handling\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eOrdinarily a standard piece needs 3–4 weeks and a bespoke commission 5–6. Other gradings are possible, green, amber, grey or pink, and the landscape can be widened to take more peaks. A pink grading suggests mountains at dawn, and a grey one a winter lake. The blue can also be carried up into the summits, so that each peak darkens towards its top as its reflection does. Take it with both hands beneath the horizon at either end, never by a peak or by the thin tips of the reflection, and set it down so both tips sit squarely on the marble.
