Black at the core clears toward the rim, so the density of the colour follows the length of every rib. The disc is held upright in its black marble block, which comes with it.

Every Rib Its Own Length

A radiating surface is a set of lines that all start in the same place, and the only way to keep them from reading as a texture is to give each one a different job. The opening is the piece's only asymmetry and it carries the whole composition: centred, the disc would read as a plate with a hole in it. Set off to one side, the ribs on the short side are read against the ribs on the long one and the face acquires a direction. A colour that clears outward through the casting makes every rib read as a separate line of its own length, so what is seen is a drawing of rays and not a textured disc. The whole face is worked into ribs and polished, with the single opening left with a clean edge.

A sideboard, a console or a mantelpiece where it is met face on. A plain wall behind it. The rays are the subject and they need an empty ground. Light from one side gives every rib its own shadow, which is what makes the radiation legible. The disc and its off-centre opening read from the doorway; the individual ribs need two paces.

Closing the Opening, and Getting It There

Bespoke commissions take 5–6 weeks; standard pieces take 3–4. The opening can be moved or closed, the ribs can be cut coarser, and the black can be exchanged for a tint. Close the opening and the disc becomes symmetrical, which takes away the one thing stopping it reading as a plate. One crate, face protected, arriving on its block. One person, though the face is wide enough that two makes it safer. Carry by the block.
