The top is a pale sawn face of end grain with its rings showing, set inside a narrow clear rim.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eA Crackled Black Stump in a Clear Fluted Skin\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe stool holds a single dark mass and lets the geometry of its skin do the rest. Across the front the black shows through the resin and every flute carries a hard gloss highlight down its crest, and together they draw bright vertical lines over a dark ground. At the flanks the resin stands well proud of the stump, and there the flutes turn glassy and clear, which gives the stool a bright outline around a black heart. At a distance the stool is a dark column; close to, the fine crackle of the stump's surface shows under the gloss. The pale top is the one warm note on it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAt 45cm it meets the height of a dining chair's seat and takes a seat happily, but the clear flutes are the reason to put it where light can get at it: beside a window, at the end of a run of glazing, or under a wall light. Against a dark floor the whole stool disappears into the ground and the channels stop reading, which is the one placement to avoid. It suits a hall, a dressing room, a study or the foot of a bed, and it is small enough in plan to slide into a gap a wider stool could not use. It is heavy for its size and needs nothing under it. The flutes are the decision on this one. Cut deep as here, the clear ridges stand well out from the black and the stool is a play of black against light; eased back, it becomes a plain dark drum with a rippled edge and reads far more sober. In place of the black, a smoke grey softens the contrast considerably and a bottle green gives it colour. Diameter and height are set together so the proportion holds, and both can be increased to order. The sawn top can be left pale as here or taken to the same black as the body, which makes the object a single mass and loses the one warm note in it. It travels upright in one crate with the flute crests packed, and it is a two-person lift.
