Aqua is banked through the arch and again down the foot, and the middle of the body is left colourless between them. A slim black block is supplied and lifts the foot clear of the surface.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eWhere the Colour Stops\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eAt this size the arch stops being the problem, and what the piece is about instead is how thin the body can be taken. The banding is what makes it work at this size. Colour at the two ends and none in the middle leaves the eye somewhere to start and somewhere to finish on an object small enough to take in at once. At this size the casting can be taken thinner than on either of its relations, which is what lets the middle go clear. Polished, and the clear middle is the part that shows whether the polish is any good.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA desk or a bookshelf. This is the one in the family that fits a room rather than a hall. Something plain behind, since half the object is clear and will show whatever is there. Put a lamp low and the aqua pools at the arch; from above it disperses and the piece goes pale. The aqua is what carries; from any distance the clear middle simply is not there.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eA Second Colourway, and Moving It About\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eOrdinarily a standard piece needs 3–4 weeks and a bespoke commission 5–6. The aqua is run through the whole body, the arch is drawn further over, and a marble block is supplied instead of the black one. Run the aqua right through and the body is made heavier to hold it, so the piece stops being half invisible. The same form is made in a smoke grey, which turns a piece you look through into one you look at. Both parts share a crate, the block packed under the casting, and the two go together by hand in a moment. One person and one hand, taken under the foot rather than anywhere near the flare.
