Nothing comes under it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eA Sphere Opened on a Slant\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eOpening a sphere on a diagonal leaves two elliptical faces, and the whole character of the object depends on how steep that diagonal is. This one is opened deep enough to leave a wide mouth between a low lip and a high one, and the rust that gathers at the two lips is what keeps the opening from disappearing into the honey. The colour is split along the same diagonal: honey and crinkled gold-toned flakes fill the half under the high lip, and the other half thins to a clear, pale wash, so the orb reads warm on one side and light on the other. It is polished inside and out, with the rust at the lips worked no differently from the honey elsewhere.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA side table or a bookshelf suits it, with the opening turned toward the room. A pale ground behind keeps the opening light; a dark one fills it with shadow. Light falling into the opening picks out the flakes in the honey half and leaves the clear half glowing. The cut is set at a different angle, the rust is carried further down, and the gold-toned flakes are left out. Change the angle of the cut and both faces change with it, since the two lips are one opening through a single body. It travels as a single piece in one crate, bedded on its closed side so neither lip takes any load in transit, with nothing to put together at the far end. It is raised by the body alone, with no hand on either lip.
