The wall between the two scoops is the only structure in the object and it scales down faster than the ball does, so at this diameter it is close to the thinnest section the material will hold while the piece is still setting. Drawn any lighter it distorts as it cures; drawn heavier it stops the light and the two hollows stop answering one another. The amber is chosen to suit that wall rather than the other way round.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAt 46cm it sits on furniture rather than on the floor, and it belongs where it will be looked at from a seat: a low table between chairs, a sideboard, or a shelf at about chest level. The cream inside the scoops only reads from in front, so it wants a position with one clear approach rather than a spot to be walked around. Light from the side is worth more than light from above, which flattens the graded skin into a single tone.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eThe Amber, the Proportions, and Delivery\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eOrdinarily a standard piece needs 3–4 weeks and a bespoke commission 5–6. The amber is lifted to honey, the outer skin is left lighter, and the stone beneath is made in other proportions. Other diameters of the same ball are made, and the stone under it is drawn thicker or thinner to set how much of the total height belongs to the casting. A tint run right through gives a different object again, since a single strength of colour removes the difference between the skin and the scoop that this piece is built on. The two parts share a case with the stone packed apart, and the casting is light enough for one person to handle.
