Amber fills the middle of every plane and red is banked along each edge, so the outline is drawn in a different colour from the mass. A black marble block comes with it, and the casting rests along one long edge rather than at a point.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eBubbles Used as the Subject\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eBubbles held in a body are usually a fault, and using them as the subject means the distribution has to look deliberate at every depth. Amber fills each plane and red gathers where two of them meet, so the faceting is drawn in colour as well as in light and the piece keeps its shape even in a dark corner. The body holds bubbles right through its depth, and they are as much what is being sold here as the colour is. Polished on every plane, so the bubbles are read at depth rather than as texture.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA hall, a landing or a long room, sited so the light passes it rather than falls on it. A dark wall behind it turns the amber up; anything pale and the whole body goes flat. Light from behind is what this piece is for: the bubbles come alive and the edges turn to a line of red. The amber carries a long way and the faceting does not, so from the door it is one colour and one shape.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eBroader Facets, and How It Arrives\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhether it is standard or bespoke sets the build: 3–4 weeks or 5–6. The facets are cut broader, the red is carried further in from the edges, and a deeper block is supplied. Cut the facets broader and there are fewer of them, so the piece loses the busyness that makes it read as crystal. Level the block in its final position, and the casting is lowered onto it after that. Two people for the casting alone. Two people, hands under the broad part and never at the bend.
