With so many faces the colour breaks into a mosaic rather than a few fields: green and yellow-green shimmer through the upper half and the middle, amber running to a red-orange gathers across the lower planes, and small hot flashes of orange are scattered through the body wherever a facet behind catches the light.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eMany Small Planes Read as Iridescence\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eMany small planes give iridescence; few large ones give colour. A dichroic film returns a different hue at every angle, so a face wide enough to fill your view returns ONE hue and reads as a coloured panel, while a face the size of a thumbnail returns its own hue beside twenty others and the eye blends them into a shimmer. Neither is better: this one is a piece about light more than about colour. The cost of the shimmer is bench time. Every plane is its own setup - positioned, cut, then checked against its neighbours - and a block with twenty-odd faces takes several times as long as one with eight, for the same volume of material removed. The scattered flashes are the reward, and a coarse cut cannot produce so many of them.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAt 40cm this belongs where it is seen close and in movement: a desk, a cabinet top at eye level, or the near end of a console. A shimmer needs the viewer to move, and the piece is largely wasted somewhere it is only ever seen from one fixed chair. It also wants a light SOURCE rather than general brightness. A window, a lamp or a single downlight gives the small planes something definite to return; an evenly lit room with no strong source leaves the whole surface pale and the flashes do not appear at all.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eSetups, Film and What Arrives\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eMost pieces are standard and take 3–4 weeks; a bespoke commission takes 5–6. The plane count paces this build, since every face is its own setup on the bench and there are twenty-odd of them. Facet size and outline are yours to set, and so is the film: cut finer still, worked in eight broad planes for colour instead of shimmer, or made as a set of three at graded heights. For film there is this amber and green, a blue-to-violet, or a pastel. A version with the small planes on the upper half only is also made, which reads as a shimmer over a solid colour. It is set down and turned, with no assembly.
